Whereas Josiah Hill III, who was born on February 20, 1939,

spent most of his adult life living in Oregon and working as a

community health activist; and

Whereas Josiah Hill III, after retirement following 23 years of

employment as a physician assistant specializing in orthopedics

and sports and dance medicine, served as the vice chairperson for

health for the Coalition of Black Men; and

Whereas Josiah Hill III served on the board of directors of

Physicians for Social Responsibility and was responsible for

coordinating the screening of the blood of children in high-risk

neighborhoods for the presence of high levels of lead; and

Whereas Josiah Hill III served on the board of directors of the

African American Health Coalition, which addresses health

disparities and wellness issues in the African American

community; and

Whereas Josiah Hill III served as a medical consultant to and

village elder of the Northwest Afrikan American Ballet, offering

medical assistance and guidance to the company; and

Whereas Josiah Hill III served as a site coordinator for the

Saturday School program sponsored by the Black United Front; and

Whereas Josiah Hill III served as a mentor to fourth and fifth

grade students at Humboldt Elementary School; and

Whereas Josiah Hill III served as a member of the Governor’s

Environmental Justice Advisory Council; and

Whereas Josiah Hill III served as cochairperson of the City of

Portland Police Chief’s Forum and its committee on racial

profiling; and

Whereas the African American community and all Oregonians lost

a powerful, passionate and persistent champion in the fight for

social, racial, health and economic justice when Josiah Hill III

passed away on October 12, 2000; and

Whereas Josiah Hill III is survived by his wife, Martha Carter

Hill; his parents, Virginia Humes Hill Galloway and

A. K. Galloway; his daughters, Elizabeth Virginia Simpson and

Delane Kennice Hill; his sons, Josiah Hill IV and Shanti Bay

Hill; his sisters, Veronica K. Jones and Juanita M. Washington;

and four grandchildren; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of

Oregon:

That we, the members of the Seventy-first Legislative Assembly,

in honor of his lifetime of service to the citizens of Oregon, do

hereby proclaim February 20, 2001, to be Josiah Hill III Day.
